1A Wimpole Street
Marylebone, London
2013
SAY Architects refurbished this entrance lobby in Wimpole Street, London, in collaboration with Rients Interiors. The concept creates symmetry within the lobby and an airy openness which was not apparent in the existing space.
Belonging to the Royal Society of Medicine, the building required grandeur and presence, a mood which is fully expressed in the use of geometric forms: Large circular pendant lights are incorporated, with rock crystal features, while SAY chose to use an Onyx stone cladding, befitting of this Regency building, arranged in a graphic pattern. Drama and focus is provided by the large expanse of backlit onyx on the rear lift wall, which is framed by dark timber cladding on either side.
